Jack Mahoney
2. Jeopardy winner moves to Maine

Hi All,
Just wanted to add my two cents: Hello to everyone--I
miss you and wanted very much to be there for the
reunion.
I've landed in a strange profession that is working
out great right now: SAT test preparation. I taught
for Stanley Kaplan in NYC and trained teachers there.
Here in Maine, I've written a curriculum and really
love teaching the kids here. This state is decades
behind when it comes to preparing for standardized
tests and has paid the price in very low admissions
rates. It's nice to be in the right place at the
right time. My company, Maine Prep, has a web site:
www.maineprep.com.
In 1977, I moved to NYC and began making a living as
an actor (mostly TV commercials) around 1980. My
career was up and down but supported me until around
1992. In 1988, I met a wonderful woman (my ex), we
wed in 1989 in NYC and have two amazing children,
Maggie, who'll be 13 this month, and Evan, who's 11.
I'm attaching a picture taken on the deck of Sarah's
house. The corgi is Boots.
In 1992, I was on Jeopardy and won four games. That
was enough to get me into the next year's Tournament
of Champions, where I won the first game and lost the
semifinal in Final Jeopardy, when I couldn't remember
Lee Iacocca's name. From that, I got the job with
Kaplan.
Sarah and I split up in 1995; she went on to become
the editor in chief of Fitness and Ladies Home
Journal. About three years ago, she asked me if I'd
be willing to move out of the City. At that point, we
were living in Queens (she and the kids in Forest
Hills, me in Richmond Hill), which is not The City
That Never Sleeps. I said, sure, where? She said
Maine.
Two years ago last week we made the move (separately
but together), she and the kids to Durham and me to
Brunswick. It's about a 20-minute drive from one
house to the other and it's working out for everyone.
Sarah does freelance writing and about six months ago
I started my test prep business.
It's been great hearing from everyone (Charlotte,
Michael, Ron, Garth, Liz, et al.) and I hope we can
keep up the correspondence and that if any of you are
ever in my Maine neighborhood you'll look me up!
All the best,
=====
